Gardone Riviera is situated on the west shore of Lake Garda, about 40 km from Brescia. This Municipal district is divided in Gardone di Sopra and Gardone di Sotto. Together with other seven districts on the west shore, Gardone is part of the Riviera dei Limoni.
The surroundings of Gardone are an unforgettable botanic garden where you can find the typical Mediterranean, subtropical and central European vegetation. Particularly worth a visit are the botanic garden A. Hruska with uncountable plant types, the Villa Alba with a beautiful surrounding park, today a convention centre.
The climate is mild for the whole year, thanks to the natural protection of the hills that surround the locality. The elegant promenade on the shore and the welcoming cafés invite you to taste a cappuccino and a croissant.
The most important economic source is tourism, together with the cultivation of olive and lemon trees
on the hilly and mountain landscape as well as fishing.
Gardone has become a significant touristic destination at the end of the 18th century, as soon as influent German tourists and doctors were sure that the locality and its surroundings had positive effects on people’s health. After a long curative stay in Gardone di Riviera, the Austrian Luis Wimmer commissioned the first hotel in this area and promoted this curative image of Gardone in whole Europe.
The most famous place of interest
is the "Vittoriale degli Italiani" in Gardone di Sopra, property of the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio from 1912 to 1938. In the building, surrounded by many beautiful gardens, there is the tomb of D’Annunzio, an open-air theatre, the museum of D’Annunzio and a library.
Many events attract numerous tourists in Gardone every year: open-air concerts, festivals, sport manifestations and expositions.
