Both towns cover a wide area and over time they largely merged together, remaining separated only by the river. Toscolano is famous for its paper factories, printing works and old paper factories. Even Martin Luther translated of a Bible, which was printed in Toscolano. Maderno lies in a semicircular bay, which is narrow at a beautiful lakeshore promenade with nice mansions and parks. Because of its geographical location, Toscolano - Maderno is the centre on the western side of the lake. The car ferry starts here to get at the eastern shore.
