Desenzano on the southwest end of the lake is the only really town on the lake with its 20,000 inhabitants. Already during the Middle Ages Desenzano was an important commercial place in northern Italy . The well restored buildings along the harbour "Ponte Vecchio" and in the old part of town are memorials of a glorious past. Lombardian prosperity is shown also in the distinguished shops, the extensive sail harbour and the sauntering mile along the "Lungolago". But it gives also numerous possibilities for sportsmen and -women: swimming pools, riding stables and tennis places, which are available everywhere in the whole year. As Desenzano is situated on the Verona Milano train line, it is an ideal starting place for day journeys to Verona , Venice and Milan.
