Gardone is located at the western shore of Lake Garda, approx. 40 km far from Brescia and belongs to the regional park “Alto Garda Bresciano”. The municipality consist of eight districts, which are scattered over lake and hills.
The surrounding area of Gardone Riviera is an incomparable „botanical garden“ where the typical Mediterranean, subtropical and central European vegetation can be found. The botanical garden “Hruska” and the villa Alba with the beautiful community park, today congress centre, are worth seeing.
The climate is mild throughout the year due to the natural protection of the hills which are surrounding the village.
Tourism is the most important economic resource. The cultivation of olives and citrus fruits in the hill and mountain area as well as fishing is of major significance too.
Gardone has become an important tourist destination at the end of the 18. century, due to the conviction of some powerful German tourists and doctors that the region would have a beneficial effect to health. Luigi Wimmer a man of Austrian origins who spent a long time in Gardone has built the first big hotel in this area and promoted its image in whole Europe. Famous personalities from all over Europe came to Gardone Riviera to spend their cure stay there.
The most popular sight is the property of the poet Gabriele from 1912 until 1938, called “Vittoriale degli Italiani” in “Gardone Sopra”. In the buildings, surrounded by several gardens, is the grave of the poet, the open air theatre, the D’Annunzio museum and the library located. |
